Transportation

How are we getting there?

Unlike previous years’ adventures, there is no coordinated travel to our destination of London Beaufoy. The distance is so great that it would take two days by bus, and the simplest, most affordable way to get from the EC to London is by plane. Flying from Memmingen or Munich to London are suggested, but there are other accessible airports as well. You should find all the information you need here for you to book your travel from the EC to a nearby airport, find a good flight to London, and get from the airport in London to Victoria Station, which is walking distance from the Buddhist center.

If you have questions, please feel free to write to: helpers@buddhism.org.uk

Please note – Working in the center is major part of the program – plan travel accordingly.

Monday, August 15 – Wednesday, August 17 are set as arrival days. Program starts on the evening of the 17th, and the 18th and 19th are full work days. For those who would like to do tourist activities in London, please come days early and do it then so that we can all help out working in the center together. This is an important new step for our Adventures which will even further deepen our bonds. Our friends in London are able to offer us the lowest price they can with the understanding that people will be helping out, so let’s all please honor that. Anyway working together is a blast!

Traveling from the EC to a nearby airport

Deutsch Bahn is the German train system. You can search for tickets and timetables directly on the site. The cheapest option is the Bavaria ticket (Bayern ticket) which is affordable (23 euros for one person – 43 euros for 5 people) and can be used for up to 5 people for travel within the Bavarian region. These can be purchased directly at the station immediately before use. For travel outside of Bavaria, or if you prefer to book a train reservation, making a purchase several days in advance is much cheaper than just before getting on the train.

Information about Bayern-Tickets
If the ticket shows a space for your name, please enter your first and last name in block capitals. Please make sure you carry a valid ID document with photo. If several passengers are travelling in a group, enter the name of the passenger travelling the longest route.

Flying to London

There are some low cost airline options to London, which may have restrictions on amount of luggage allowed. The low cost airlines tend to charge extra for every service (in some cases using the bathroom), but are an option for traveling cheaply. Price ranges tend to be 50 – 100 euros for a one-way ticket.

Low fare airlines
easyJet – direct flights from Munich to London
Ryan Air – direct flights from Memmingen to London (no flights on 14 or 15 Aug)

More traditional airlines also offer some good deals for travel within Europe, especially when purchased far enough in advance. They may be a bit more comfortable and with more usual luggage policies. Price ranges tend to be 100 – 300 euros.

Classic airlines
British Airways
Lufthansa
Air Berlin
SAS Scandinavian Airlines

The nearest airport is Memmingen Airport (FMM / EDJA) - 64 km from the center of Immenstadt. If enough people fly from Memmingen, our friends from the EC might be able to arrange a shuttle service. If enough are on the same flight, our friends in London might be able to arrange a shuttle from the London Stansted airport to the center.

Munich (MUC) is the nearest major airport with the most options.

St. Gallen-Altenrhein Airport (ACH / LSZR) has flights from Altenrhein, Switzerland and is 74 km from Immenstadt. Bodensee Airport, Friedrichshafen (FDH / EDNY) has flights from Friedrichshafen, Germany and is 76 km from Immenstadt, Germany
