Information for parents

Can I bring my children to the course?

Yes!

Will there be a place for children to play during the lectures?

Yes! We will build up a 20’x40’ kids tent with a floor and provide toys, games and craft supplies for the kids. (If you have some to donate, please email vicky@diamondway.org) There is also plenty of open space in nature for kids to enjoy with adult supervision or for older kids who do not need supervision.

Will there be childcare?

Yes! Childcare is available for a $60 fee and will be provided in the kids’ tent only during Lama Ole’s lectures. Children who do not register for childcare may still use the kids’ tent, but they must have a parent stay with them or indicate that they are old enough to not need supervision. Children who do not register for childcare will wear a different color wristband and the childcare providers will not supervise those children. (If they run off into the woods, no one will stop them!)

How much does it cost for children to attend?

The registration fee for children covers the cost of building up the kids’ tent, along with food and miscellaneous consumables (toilet paper, soap, bug spray, etc.) The registration fee does NOT include childcare, which is an additional $60.

Age 0-3 - $15

Age 4-10 - $25

Age over 10 - $40

Where can we sleep if we don’t want to camp?

You can arrange your own accommodations at one of the nearby rental cabins, bed and breakfasts, or motels around HRC. Visit the Where to stay page for details. If you choose this option, you will need a car to get to and from HRC. (None of the lodging options are within walking distance.)

Should I be worried about my children getting ticks?

Bug spray with DEET will be provided and we encourage you to use it. (If you’re worried about chemicals in the bug spray, read the Environmental Working Group’s report on bug repellent, which advises using DEET to prevent ticks.) You will want to emphasize to your children the importance of staying in the mowed areas and staying out of the tall grass. If you do those two simple things, the likelihood of getting a tick is very low. You’ll also want to check your child for ticks every day, and there are spacious showers with mirrors that make this easy. If ticks are found early and properly removed, the likelihood of contracting Lyme disease is very low.

I have more questions. Who do I ask?

Write to vicky@diamondway.org – she’s a parent who lives on-site at HRC, and she’d be happy to answer your questions.
